Working at Nevion – Q&A with Piotr Duraj

Nevion’s Solution Delivery Director in the Professional Services team, in Poland.

Welcome back to our ‘Q&A with the Architects’ series! This time around, we spoke with Piotr Duraj, Nevion’s Solution Delivery Director in the Professional Services team.
Piotr reflects on his almost nine-year journey at Nevion, discusses what he finds most exciting about the media technology industry and shares how his involvement in the modernization of Finland’s national radio network helped shape his career.

What attracted you to join Nevion as part of your career journey and what is your role there now?

When a headhunter reached out about an opportunity at Nevion, I wasn’t actively looking for a change, but the chance to learn more was hard to ignore. After doing some research, what impressed me most was the company’s global reach and the scale of the projects it was delivering. My experience up until then had been primarily with local cable operators and ISPs, so joining Nevion felt like a natural next step and a chance to broaden my experience within the media technology industry. Today, I lead the Delivery Team within Professional Services, helping customers around the world successfully deploy and operate our solutions.

How has your role progressed whilst you’ve been at Nevion?

I’ve been part of the Professional Services team since day one, but I originally joined as a Technical Integration Engineer, working on customer installations, gaining hands-on experience and learning about Nevion’s product portfolio. I believe that time was especially important because it gave me a solid technical foundation and a deep understanding of Nevion’s solutions, which still helps me today when leading projects and supporting my team. A few years later, I became a Solution Delivery Manager, where I began leading projects more independently and taking greater responsibility for their successful delivery. Today, while continuing to lead customer projects, I also manage a team of delivery specialists. Together, we help customers successfully implement and operate our solutions.

What words would you use to describe Nevion?

I would use the words team, people and culture. It’s those three words together that make Nevion a special place. We have very talented and skilled people here who want to help one another. There’s a culture where people want to share knowledge, and there’s a sense of trust and openness. Even when we’re working under pressure or against tight deadlines, everyone works together to meet project requirements. And that internal culture should always lead to the ultimate goal, which is customer success.

What interested you about working in the broadcast industry?

The chance to work closely with some of the biggest broadcasters and media organizations in the world and learn about their workflows, operational needs and technologies was very appealing to me. While I had previous experience in the media industry, broadcasting itself was relatively new to me, which made it even more interesting.

Can you tell us about a project you have worked on during your time at Nevion that you are most proud of?

I would say it was the modernization of Finland’s radio system for Yle, the country’s national broadcaster. It was one of the first projects where I was involved throughout the entire lifecycle, from proof of concept and a system design that had to accommodate countless corner cases and real-world operational requirements, all the way through implementation and commissioning. The project became a significant part of my professional life for more than a year. It was demanding, but also incredibly rewarding. It gave me the confidence to lead larger-scale international engagements, and the relationship with the customer has continued well beyond the initial implementation through further extensions and enhancements.

What is your favorite thing about working for Nevion?

It’s the moment when everything comes together and a customer project successfully goes live. Every customer and project is different, and many requirements are not fully defined from day one, so the team must be flexible and creative. I’m always impressed by my colleagues’ ability to approach challenges from different perspectives and deliver value to customers, no matter how complex the project is. When everything clicks into place, that’s a great feeling.

What new technology/ innovation excites you the most in the broadcasting world?

The industry’s shift towards software-based solutions is what I find most exciting. This evolution gives much greater flexibility in how systems are designed, deployed and operated. Combined with orchestration across the entire workflow, it enables resources, connections and services to be managed in a more automated and efficient way.
