Nevion adds SRT to its Virtuoso platform for reliable transport over unmanaged networks

New upgrade extends low-latency HEVC capabilities, enabling broadcasters to use less reliable networks without compromising on quality

Oslo, Norway, 4 September, 2025Nevion, a Sony Group Company, announced today that the latest upgrade to its software-defined media node Virtuoso includes support for hardware-accelerated SRT (Secure Reliable Transport). The addition of this transport protection protocol to the existing low-latency HEVC compression functionality enables broadcasters to leverage unmanaged networks, including the Internet, for applications such as connectivity back-up or GCCG (ground-to-cloud-cloud-to-ground) transport.

More broadcasters are turning to unmanaged networks for less critical applications, because managed wide-area networks (WANs), which are optimum for live production, are not always available, or their cost can be prohibitive. To achieve a degree of media transport reliability over such networks, high-compression of video and an ARQ (Automatic Repeat request) transport protection mechanism are required. SRT is the most commonly used ARQ in live production.

Support for transport over unmanaged networks is the latest addition to Nevion Virtuoso, a key component of Sony’s Networked Live offering. Virtuoso has been widely used for many years across the globe for the live contribution and remote production of high-value content, including premium sports events. Virtuoso’s Compress capability provides a variety of video encoding methods (including JPEG XS and HEVC) and transport protection mechanisms (including advanced FEC, SMPTE ST 2022-7 and now SRT) to support the low latency, reliable and pristine quality transport.

In addition to SRT, the latest Virtuoso upgrade also includes a variety of updates to existing functionality, including support for UHD HEVC compression.

Steve Hard, VP of Product Management for Virtuoso, at Nevion says: “We are continuously upgrading our Virtuoso platform to add functionality most requested by our customers. Providing support for unmanaged network transport is significant, as it brings the premium quality we are known for to applications that have historically suffered from inferior quality.”

Virtuoso will be on show at IBC 2025 (Amsterdam, 12-15 September 2025), in the Networked Live area of Sony’s booth 13.A10.
