Meet Trym Ramberg, software engineer in the VideoIPath team in Norway.
In the newest entry to our ‘Q&A with the Architects’ series, we spoke with Trym Ramberg, Software Engineer in the VideoIPath team at Nevion. Trym spoke to us about his personal and professional development, being given a voice to express his viewpoints, his favorite VideoIPath project and why he enjoys starting his Wednesdays with a refreshing swim alongside colleagues!
What attracted you to join Nevion as part of your career journey and what is your role there now?
After completing my degree in Software Engineering, I applied for a Software Engineer role at Nevion and immediately got a really good impression of the working culture during the interview. The people I spoke to were friendly, engaged and took an interest in me personally. That was what really sold it for me. My current role is Software Engineer on the back-end team for the VideoIPath product.
How has your role progressed whilst you’ve been at Nevion?
I’ve been a Software Engineer since I started in 2023, but over time I’ve taken ownership of new tasks and responsibilities, which has been great for my development. When I’ve been ready, I’ve been trusted to take on more challenging projects that push me to grow and develop my skills. From the very beginning of my time here, I’ve also felt that my opinions are valued in meetings, and I have been encouraged to share my thoughts and ideas.
What three words would you use to describe Nevion?
My three words would be complex, engaging and fun. The tasks that I work on can be complex, but they are enjoyable challenges to take on. It’s engaging because I feel valued and trusted in my role to take on new tasks, and solving complex technical issues as a team is a particular highlight for me.
What interested you about working in the broadcast industry?
I didn’t know a huge amount about the industry before applying to Nevion, but during the application process I immediately got the impression that it’s made up of many moving parts. While that can make it difficult at times to keep track of everything during numerous tasks, the opportunity to take on technical projects that would really test me was too appealing to turn down. That’s what excites me.
Can you tell us about a project you have worked on during your time at Nevion that you are most proud of?
One of my favorite tasks has been a project I’ve worked on over the past couple of months, focused on making it easier for operators to switch between different productions and personalize their VideoIPath deployment to match their individual preferences. As part of this project I had the opportunity to visit NRK, the national broadcaster in Norway. I had the chance to chat with the team about how they wanted to tailor their VideoIPath solution to help them better control their evolving broadcast operations as the organization goes through a modernization initiative.
What is your favorite thing about working for Nevion?
Like many others in this blog series, I’d have to say the people. I love the social aspect here, and most importantly for me, I’m allowed to be myself in the office. I don’t have to pretend and that helps me feel fully relaxed. I’ve also had the opportunity to pursue a hobby of mine with work colleagues. Every Wednesday, a few of us go swimming together before heading into the office. It’s great to have friends at work who share the same interests.
What new technology/ innovation excites you the most in the broadcasting world?
It’s what everyone is talking about, but I couldn’t answer this question without mentioning AI. It will definitely shape every industry across the world, but especially broadcasting. A lot of broadcasting hardware has been in place for many years. If it could be updated with the help of AI, perhaps to automate tasks or enhance efficiency, then there is a lot of value to be gained there.
